Follow up to yesterday - BC has 11 fires currently out of control, Fires of note include:
Patry Creek, a hold over fire from last year, and
The Parker lake fire near Fort Nelson
The BC River Forecast Centre continues to report an extremely low snowpack, averaging at 16% of normal across the province, a low snowpack will limit surface runoff, stream flows and fuel moisture recharge, which could impede drought recovery across the province. Hope for wide spread and continuous rains in June as of right now the drought conditions support the potential fore easy ignition and rapid fire perimeter growth.
Alberta received much sought after relief in the form of the arrival of Ontario Fire Crews and 40mm of rain on the Fort McMurry fire - it is being held, currently 5.5 km from the Fort McMurry landfill.
The wildfire danger has been brought down to low south of Lake Athabasca but still high north of it. since January 1 2024 there have been 25 wildfires in the Fort McMurry Forest area burning a total of 25,501 ha.
Locally DRY005 is under control at approx 10ha. Crews have stopped perimeter growth and are working the interior of the fire.
Much needed precip has arrived and helped reduce fire activity in the short term allowing the danger rating system to be dropped to low in the area.
As we have our forest come to full flush, now is the time to get our properties ready for the drying forests the heat of the summer brings each year.
